Morning routine

Frog As promised, I have some new pictures to show you of Dewey & Daisy.  First of all, I want to show you a critter of a different sort.  A couple of years ago, Todd brought home some little feeder fish for our ducks to play with (okay, eat).  Along with them came two tadpoles.  He put those in the fish pond and we really didn't see too much of them after that.  Well, about a month ago, Todd was working in the duck pond and found a frog!  Now for those of you in frog country, that may not be a big thing, but I've lived in the Phoenix area all my life and have never seen a frog here! Todd is sure that this is one of our tadpoles, but instead of taking him back to the fish pond, he left him in the duck pond.  A little while later, Dewey & Daisy were in the pond and totally freaked when the frog surfaced!  You'd think they'd seen the Loch Ness monster!  Daisy, especially, was pretty scared, so Todd finally relocated the frog back to the fish pond. (This is the frog on Todd's hand.) As secure as our duck pen is now (and therefore the pond, since it's inside), we don't expect to see Mr Frog over there anytime soon.  I know Daisy is relieved.

Dewey_daisy_200709 When planning the rebuilding of the duck pen, it was important that it not only be secure, but that it be a place where Dewey & Daisy would feel comfortable, happy, and safe.  We kept the same footprint (12x25") and the pond is in the same spot, but the walls & roof are now entirely made of metal pipe and hardware cloth (a welded metal mesh).  The hardware cloth is secured to the pipe supports with screws and washers every 6-8" and there's absolutely no way a predator can get through it.  It's shaped a little like a barn with the peak at 8' so it's very easy for Todd & I to walk around inside.  In addition to having sturdy walls & roof, it was important that the ducks have a source of shade.  They have a wooden house for nesting in, but they're still spooked by it and won't go in.  Summers in Arizona can get hot so Todd found some good garden shade cloth and secured it over the sides and top of the pen that is over the pond (the north end).  Now that the sun is further south, they're getting more sun in the pen, but it's not so hot here and they enjoy preening in the sun in the mornings.  All that was to explain why there are some weird shadow lines in some of these pictures (and why the pictures have a golden cast to them).  This first shot is of Dewey (left) and Daisy (right) in the morning when they first went out for the day.  You can see that the dirt is nicely filled in around the edges of the pond.  We're working to get the grass to come back, and it's better now than a month ago (when these pictures were taken), but in the next pictures you'll see why we're having issues.

Dewey_lettuce_200709 Their morning routine includes having fresh grain and some Romaine lettuce.  Here's a picture of Dewey helping herself to the lettuce.  That's right;  it's not cut up for them.  It's not even ripped off the core.  They seem to take great enjoyment in pecking at the head of lettuce and, interestingly, they typically go for the part closest to the core first.  What I like about this picture is that it shows how Dewey will put her foot on the lettuce to hold it still while she nibbles at the leaves.  This is a common thing for her.  I'm not sure where Daisy was at the time;  perhaps she had ripped some lettuce off and was eating it at a distance.  And when the lettuce leaves are all eaten, they like to play keep-away with the core!

Dewey_pond_200709After their snack, it was time to get in the pond and splash around for awhile.  For some reason, Dewey contemplated her splash down for quite some time.  I don't know if it was because we were watching or if it was the camera, but she stood at the edge of the pond for a very long time.  I love how she's got her toes curled over the edge in this picture.

So what is their absolute favorite thing to do outside?  Swimming?  no   Eating?  no  Preening?   no

Daisy_dewey_mud_200709 Their most favorite activity is doodling in the mud!  Todd has created an area at the opposite end of the pond (in a corner by the door) for them to use as a mud bog.  They love slapping the mud with their feet...they look like they're crushing grapes at a winery!  And they love digging around for worms and bugs.  But sometimes they're just a little too lazy to go over there.  And they like to dig while they're floating on the pond.  So what happens?  Craters appear in the area around the pond.  Now, in this picture they aren't floating, but you can get an idea of what they're doing. Daisy_mud_200709  And here's a close-up of Daisy.  She got her bill drilled down about as far as she can go!

Daisy_muddy_bill_200709 And here's our little sweetie coming up for air.  She must think she's at the spa getting some sort of fancy facial. The mud is literally dripping off her bill and you can see a hole in the ground where her bill has been.  (You can also see a reflection of the duck pen and our backyard fence in the pond.  There's actually about 3' between the pen and the fence but this picture makes it look like it's a tight fit.)

So that's why we're having trouble bringing the grass back, and why their pond always looks so muddy.  You see, it's not enough to dig in the mud.  They have to stick their face in the pond to rinse off each time too.  And lest you think that this little mud crater isn't very big, after a day or two without filling them in, those holes go down about 6" deep all around the pond liner.  Todd is constantly filling them in (and scooping mud out of the bottom of the pond).  I see sod in our future!Nest_200709

One last thing:  this is what happens when we don't collect eggs for a few days.  This is their nest in an area not too far from the pond.  Some days they lay them inside the house, other days in the nest by the pond.  But never, never do they lay them in the duck house that Todd built for them.

More of our Seattle trip

In the interest of brevity, and trying to help you avoid the dreaded "let me show you my vacation pictures" situation, I have created a photo album of our Seattle trip in the upper left column of this blog.  What will you see?  Well, you'll see the ducky pics I already told you about (I won't be offended if you choose to skip over those since I already showed some of them to you) plus a bunch of other stuff:  the Ride the Ducks of Seattle tour (such a FUN time!), all kinds of ducky "stuff", Pike Place Market, the original Starbucks, a cruise on Elliott Bay, and even a few pictures taken from the airplane.

I have been terribly remiss at not posting recent pictures of our ducks.  Part of this was because we were in the process of rebuilding their outdoor pen for a very long time.  There's only so many pictures of ducks in a bathtub that we can show, ya know?  However, I have some new outdoor pictures to share so come back in a day or two and take a look.

Afternoon visitor

Coopers_hawk This afternoon Todd walked into the office, glanced out the window, and said, "Don't move.  I mean, move...slowly and look out the window."  There, nestled under a creosote bush, not far from our fish pond was a bird.  A large bird.  With a big, curved beak.

It stayed there for quite some time, looking all around, but otherwise not moving much.  Its wings looked a little cockeyed and we began to think it was injured.  I tried to snap some pictures but they didn't turn out so great through the window.  After about 10 minutes, Todd decided to try to catch it and get it some help (if it was truly injured).  While he was out getting some gloves and a cage, it finally moved and settled its wings back in place (NOT injured!) and I saw that it was clutching onto something.  A few minutes later, he flew up to the top of the fence and I could tell he was carrying a (very mangled) black bird.  And soon he was gone.

Todd was out back a few minutes later and discovered where the kill happened.  It was hard to miss:  a pile of black feathers over several square feet.  (I'll spare you the gruesome details.)

And this is one of the reasons we have a very secure duck pen.

By the way, after some research (friends, internet) we have determined that it was a juvenile Cooper's Hawk.

What I've been up to

I've alluded to the fact that the last few months have been super busy...."too busy to blog" is what you're thinking, I know!  So, over the next few days, I'm going to try to catch you up on my last few months.  Don't worry, it won't be like an invitation to Uncle Bob's vacation slideshow.  I'll be much more brief.  In fact, I'm going to completely skip over two entire trips:  CHA Summer show in Chicago (July) and Club Scrap Retreat (August).  It's not that these trips weren't important; I just don't have very good pictures of either and, while I had a great time at both, it's just not the same unless you were there with me.

Dorn_family_aug_2007 However, right after I got back from retreat, Todd & I went to Seattle for a family reunion.  For the first time in many years, every single family member were together (his mom's two sisters and their families along with Todd's).  We all got together in Yakima on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  This picture is of the entire clan, such as we are. (Todd is the tall one at the back right; I'm next to him, in black, but mostly hidden by a cousin.) I don't even remember when we were all together last, but it was great to see each other again, meet the newest additions, and have a chance to catch up.

Todd_flapper But I can't go any further without telling you that we met some celebrities while we were in Seattle!  Yes, it's true.  They have their own website and have quite the fan following.  On Saturday (yes, it was basically the first thing we did in Seattle!) we went to visit someone we met online, specifically on a pet duck Yahoo group.  We had been away from home for barely 24 hours and already we were missing our duckies, so it was great fun to visit Tiff and her flock.  It was such fun to talk with someone else who "gets" why we have pet ducks.  Not only does Tiff have Mr. Flapper, but she has 6 other ducks too!  We got to meet them all, except for Georgie who was busy sitting on her nest and did *not* want to be disturbed!  This first picture is of Todd having a conversation with the Flap man himelf.  Flapper is a very handsome Pekin and easy to get to know. You can see a couple of the duck pens in the background and you can see Chewy in the lower left corner (more about him in a minute).

Todd_janis_kozmo_chewy After Todd bonded with Flapper, I got to know Chewy Magooey, a Magpie duck.  He's Tiff's most recent acquisition and was only about 5 months old.  While we were getting acquainted, Todd was nowhere to be found.  All of sudden, there he was with Kozmo Kirby, truly a monster duck!  He's the son of Flapper and Georgie and is half Pekin and half Muscovy.  He doesn't particularly care to be held and Tiff was surprised that Todd was able to pick him up.  So here we are, holding Kozmo and Chewy.  Chewy was very calm, obviously used to being held. Stripey_feet He made no effort to leave my lap. And since you can't see his way-cool stripey feet very well in that picture, here's a close up for you.  Awesome feet, Chewy!

Tiff_omalley And our duck visit pictures wouldn't be complete if we didn't show you Tiff with O'Malley Peepers.  O'Malley is a Muscovy also, and is the biggest duck I've ever seen!  Todd & I are used to our two petite girls so we just couldn't get over how BIG Tiff's ducks are!  O'Malley has a very cool Elvis crest that goes up and down based on his emotions.

We got to feed the ducks their ducky snacks and I was shocked when O'Malley scooped up about 7 peas in one mouthful!   Our little girls will daintily snatch one little piece at a time, not a handful!  And after the ducky treats, Tiff presented us with a scrumptious arrangement of people treats.  Mmmm....  All in all, it was a wonderful, ducky day!

That's it for now.  Check back in a day or two and I'll show you a couple of fun, touristy things we did in Seattle.

Circles, Circles, and More Circles!

Bff Here's our layout for the weekend.  Donna Kauffroath designed this one and did an amazing job of showing the versatility of the Fiber Friend Circles template.  The bright colors and fun design elements really reflect the energy and youth of the two girls.  I love how she stitched circles around each girl, intertwining them to show their bond.

The Fiber Friend Circles template has 21 different sizes of circles, making it easy to create custom accents like this.  A centering hole is included in the template so you can easily stitch the fibers to the center or add a brad.  (Donna did both!)  She also used the Flourishes template and the Daisies template, creating an entirely different look for the flower within the circle.  The fibers she used came from the Wildflowers, Daisies, and Celebration packs.  And if you're wondering about what size layout this is, it's an 8 1/2 x 11" layout, horizontal.  Great job, Donna!   Thanks for sharing this with us!

A Layout to Share

I've come across several new designers recently that do incredible things with our templates.  They've been making layouts for us to use in our convention booths, advertising, etc.  Well, they're just too good not to share with you all so you can expect to see more samples of designs right here in this blog during the coming weeks.

Christmas2006_2 First up is this adorable layout from Cindy Nelson.  Cindy is a friend of my friend, Donna, who has been doing design work for us for years now.  (In fact, Donna's working on some top secret projects as we speak, but you'll have to wait a few months to see those!)  Back to Cindy:  she lives in New Mexico and does the most incredible doodling I've ever seen.  Are you a doodler?  I'm not.  Never once have I drawn squiggles and swirls while gabbing on the phone with a friend.  I remember watching my mother do that when I was a little kid and wondered what the heck she was doing that for!  The concept was beyond me.  I'm a symmetrical, linear person and it shows up big time in my layouts.  So when I come across someone like Cindy who not only "doodles", but does it in a fabulous way, I'm impressed, intriqued, and in awe.

This is a layout that she did using our Forest Stamp & Stitch.  There are so many details in it that are totally lost in the scan.  I wish you could see it as I do.  The pine sprig was stamped and embossed with a dark green glittery embossing powder.  When she stitched the accents, she added a shiny gold bead to each stitch.  On the photo mat, she pierced holes using the Fiber Friend template, stitched using the same green fiber as on the pine sprig, and once again added the small gold beads.  If you click on the layout, you'll see a much larger version and be able to see some of those details a little bit better.  It's absolutely stunning in person.  And the doodling...wow!  It's a gift, I tell you.  A gift.

So enjoy this layout and feel free to get some ideas for the upcoming holiday season.  That same pine sprig makes a great holiday card.  I'll show you a sample of that in the next few days.
